Favorite source is not favorite brand
In June, Achtung.app looked at which sources AI platforms cite: Perplexity cited at least one YouTube video in 44.7% of its answers, the other AI platforms in less than 3%. Gemini cited Reddit in 14.2% of its answers, the others in none at all (see the June insight). That raises an obvious question: does Perplexity name brands more often when they are present on YouTube? And does Gemini name brands more often when people discuss them on Reddit?
The answer from 43 industry reports: there is no measurable platform-specific effect. Brands with a strong presence on YouTube or Reddit are named more often, but by all three AI platforms. The platform that cites YouTube or Reddit most does not favor them on top of that.
To measure this, Achtung.app compares each brand with itself: how much more often Perplexity or Gemini names it than ChatGPT does. That takes most of a brand's size out of the picture, because a well-known brand is named more often everywhere. Achtung.app then compares this gap between brands with and without presence on YouTube or Reddit. As a control, the same comparison runs with the platforms swapped: YouTube presence on Gemini, Reddit presence on Perplexity.
For brands with a strong YouTube presence, meaning all 20 YouTube results of a search name the brand, Perplexity's naming rate rises from 3.6% to 5.0%. ChatGPT only rises from 2.8% to 3.1%, so Perplexity gains 1.1 percentage points relative to it. This is the only statistically significant result. But Gemini, which hardly cites YouTube, gains just as much: 1.1 percentage points as well (from 4.6% to 6.0%). So the gap has nothing to do with Perplexity's preference for YouTube as a source.
Naming rate with and without strong YouTube presence
Share of answers that name a brand, mean per group
Strong presence: all 20 YouTube results of a search name the brand (218 brands, without: 132). Values in percent.
On Reddit, not even that shows up. With a strong Reddit presence, Gemini names a brand in 6.0% instead of 4.7% of its answers, Perplexity in 4.9% instead of 3.9%, ChatGPT in 3.2% instead of 2.6%. Gemini's extra gain relative to ChatGPT is 0.7 percentage points, within statistical noise. Whether any presence, strong presence or an own subreddit: the gap stays between 0.6 and 0.9 percentage points and is never significant. An own YouTube channel gives Perplexity no measurable edge either.

Strong presence: at least 19 of 20 Reddit results of a search name the brand (213 brands, without: 137). Values in percent.
The likely explanation is familiarity. People talk more about well-known brands on YouTube and Reddit, and every AI platform names well-known brands more often. What stands out is how differently: ChatGPT names the brands discussed most on YouTube hardly more often than the rest, while Perplexity and Gemini do so clearly. Which sources an AI platform cites says little about which brands it names.
The analysis has limits. It covers 350 well-known brands in the German market and rests on observational data, not an experiment. Presence is derived from search results and is therefore an approximation. Whether any YouTube presence at all helps cannot be tested: only 14 of the 350 brands have no YouTube result naming them.
What this means for brands: a YouTube channel or Reddit activity is not a shortcut to more mentions by the AI platform that cites these sites most. Both are worth it where people actually talk about your brand. What goes along with being named is familiarity, and that does not come from a single platform.
